Description

Writing about one's personal experience encourages self-reflection and improves self-awareness. In this activity students are invited to reflect, in writing, on their experiences related to managing clinical risks for patients. Students to write about an event they observed or were involved in during their nursing profession that they feel might have placed a patient at risk. Alternatively, students may want to write about an event that occurred to them as recipients of healthcare, or as an observer to their friends' or family members' experiences. The event may be one that they feel related to any of anticipation, recognition, or management of a patient safety risk. Safe patient care and reducing medical-legal risk requires nurse practitioners to be aware of potential risks and how to avoid them.

The narrative should include:

·a description of the event

·an explanation of how this event placed a patient at risk

·the student's reflections on the event including:

·if and how the event was recognized

·why and how the event occurred, for example, was the event due to

oaction or inaction by an individual healthcare provider

osystem failure(s)

oa combination of systems failure(s) and individual provider performance issues

·what changes or improvements they would make, if any

·how they felt at the time

·how they currently feel about the even

·Were you personally involved in the event? Discuss.

·What, if any, workplace factors contributed to the event? (e.g., Was it during a handover? Did it involve a medication?)

·How aware was the healthcare provider(s) of what was going on around them? (situational awareness)

·How did the health care provider(s) recognize the safety problem, and how did they respond?

·How did this event affect you?

·What did you take away that you will use in the future?

·I would do something differently next time because

SELF-REFLECTION

Healthcare is a sensitive sector because it deals with the life of people. As such,
healthcare professionals are expected to be competent in their areas of work and also have a high
level of integrity. Additionally, acting ethically is paramount among the health practitioners
because of the type of work they undertake. As such, these individuals are expected to handle
patients with a lot of care. This is to prevent errors which can happen in healthcare environment
and affect the lives of patients. By having health professionals who are competent and who
follow rules and regulations, risks in healthcare institutions are prevented hence offering quality
care to patients. However, at times mistakes happen which can result from different factors
within the healthcare environment. When such happens, it places patients’ lives at risk. This
paper, therefore, will explore an event where I observed my brother being placed at risk in a
healthcare institution where I had taken him to receive care due to some illness.
Description of the Event
Having fallen sick for a whole night, I decided to take my brother to a nearby healthcare
institution early the following morning. He had been vomiting the whole night and had a severe
headache which seemed not to stop. I could not wait any longer when the morning came. As
such, I took him to New Hope healthcare where I expected he would receive the best of care;
little did I know what was in store for him. When we arrived at the hospital, there were only a
few patients who had arrived by then since it was still early in the morning. I explained to one
nurse practitioner about the condition of my brother and told her that he had been in a worse
situation the whole night and he needed immediate attention. I was sure of this because being a
nursing student, I had some knowledge about the nursing profession and my brother’s illness
seemed to be one of those incidents which need urgency.

After explaining to the nurse about my brother’s condition, the nurse took my brother to a
private room where she asked him more questions to have precise information about his
condition. Upon seeing that, I was sure he was to be given an immediate care. I was relaxed for
once having been in a state of confusion since entering the hospital. However, things did not go
as I had hoped and expec...
