Weeks Discussions and Assignments
Week 1 Concepts
Concerned about cholesterol, a friend wants to eliminate all dietary fats. On the basis of
what you have learned this week, what would be your advice? Explain.
It is important for an individual not to eliminate all dietary fats from a diet since not all
the dietary fats are considered to be bad. One of the most common dietary fats in the human
body is the triglycerides which are usually found in plenty in the body tissues in form of
saturated and unsaturated fat. The diet that is rich in saturated fat can cause an individual to
develop heart diseases through raising the LDL cholesterol levels and the diet that is rich in
unsaturated fat tend to lower the risk of individual encountering heart diseases through lowering
the LDL levels (DiNicolantonio, Lucan, & O’Keefe, 2016). Therefore, lowering or eliminating
the dietary fats in a diet would negatively affect an individual because triglycerides give the
human body a lasting energy which enables the body to function effectively. Availability of
triglycerides in the human body allows absorption and transportation of various vitamins
including A, D, E and K and in excess of it protects the human bones, cushion various organs,
and insulate the human body. Therefore, in my case, I would advise my friend to try and lower
the saturated fats and increase his unsaturated fat intake.

One chronic disease that affects the CNS is the Parkinson disease (PD) which is classified
as an idiopathic disease. The disease usually occurs due to the failure of the homeostatic
mechanism which affects the brain ability to control various body muscle movements within the
dopamine neurotransmitter. The two signs of the disease are the tremor and stiffness explaining
the slow movement of muscles. The reason behind this is that due to the disease the brain cells
which usually help in manufacturing dopamine usually become stop functioning. It is usually
difficult to know why the cells of the brain become unfunctional but lack of dopamine the
movements of the muscles becomes difficult leading to difficulties in own voluntary movements
(Wulf et al., 2016). As the dopamine level become inadequate the movements of an individual is
also slowed and become time-consuming. The diagnostic tool that would be used in diagnosing
the disease is physical examining an individual movement by a skilled neurologist who is skilled
in recognizing and treating various nervous systems conditions. It is also important to note that
there is no specific test available to diagnose the PD but through a medical examination, it can
show telltale symptoms where individual encounter difficulties in moving, stiff movements,
muscle loss, changes in heart rate and normal muscle reflexes.

WEEK 2 CONCEPTS
One of a side effects of chemotherapy is the loss of hair. Why?
Due to chemotherapy all the rapidly dividing cells in a human body are usually targeted
and affected especially all the healthy and cancer cells. One of the fastest growing cells in the
human body is the hair follicles which make hair and are usually situated at the skin and are
filled with blood vessels. During chemo when it fights the cancer cells it usually destroys the hair
cells also leading to hair loss after some weeks when an individual had begun chemo
(Botchkarev & Sharov, 2016). The extent of hair loss in an individual is also dependent on the
treatment and the medicinal intervention given to a cancer patient. Some of the intervention is
usually conducted at different times daily and weekly which also determine the extent of hair
loss. Some of the treatment is usually given in smaller doses and usually minimize the extent of
hair loss. It usually takes some few weeks for hair to start growing after the completion of
therapy and this usually leads to the hair having slightly different texture, color, and curl.
