Question Description

Offender Crummey is being released from a minimum security facility next month and has been assigned to your caseload. Your group represents the offender’s treatment team upon release. Review the presentence investigation (PSI) and the offender’s home plan. As a team, research the community resources and programs available for this offender, and assess his home plan. Develop a detailed treatment plan with measurable goals and objectives. Remember that goals are broader and more long-term, while objectives are the smaller steps that clients take to meet the overall goal.

Write a paper of 4-6 pages that addresses the following:

  • What areas does the offender need to address to be successful upon re-entry? Make sure that the goals you develop for him can be measured.
  • What community resources and programs will you draw on for this offender?
  • Is his home plan appropriate to ensure a successful re-entry? Identify any changes that you would require before approving it.
  • Also, discuss how often you would require the offender to check in with you.
  • How would you determine whether or not the offender is making progress on his goals and objectives?

Unit 4 IP Workload Organization and Management
Introduction
Many offenders, even after serving a term of jail, find it difficult to integrate into the
community as law-abiding citizens. Imperatively, effective re-entry or reintegration programs are
required on a case by case management. Reintegration programs and resources within the
community are essential in helping a former offender from reoffending and reduce recidivism
(United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2012). Further, such programs increase public
safety. In this assignment, the paper critical areas for an offender who has been released from a
minimum-security correctional facility and designs a treatment plan based on community
programs and resources for the offender.

Areas to be addressed by the offender for successful re-entry
The goal of an effective re-integration and treatment plan for a former offender is to
ensure that one is law-abiding and does not return to crime and eventually prison. Imperatively,
this treatment plan has three goals for the offender upon his release from the minimum security
facility. These are;
1. Prepare the offender for his release from confinement
2. Re-integration of the offender into the community
3. Offering long-term skills training opportunities to equip the offender for the job market

Prepare the offender for his release from confinement
Preparing the offender for his release from confinement needs to start early while he is
still in prison. The preparation should begin before the release from confinement. Re-entry

programs for inmates mostly focus on helping the ex-offender get a job and how they will live
outside prison. However, it requires assisting the offender, in this case, Crummey who will be
released next month from the prison, to change his attitude and belief about crime. Further,
preparing the offender for release means that his mental health issues should be addressed. It also
requires that he gets mentorship programs (Johnson, 2017). At this stage, the right educational
training and opportunities should be identified and the prisoner connected to the community
resources and programs. Therefore, all these have to start one month before the prisoner is
released. For instance, changing the attitude and beliefs of the offender about crime will occur
three weeks before his release by enlisting the services of mental health experts and probation
officers who shall design a program to counsel him. These experts will also address any mental
health and substance use issues. As posited by Guunnison & Helfgott (2017) one critical aspect
of successful reintegration of offenders into the community is to ensure that they have treatment
for substance abuse. Further, many former inmates suffer from co-occurring mental conditions
that reduce their ability to have successful re-entry into society. For instance, the offender
substance abuse pre-release program is a cognitive-behavioral intervention program that has
been designed to address substance abuse needs of offenders, especially before their release and
subsequent reintegration (Johnson, 2017). The offender will also identify the kind of training
with the help of community program personnel to enroll in after his release. The offender will
also get a mentor through an appropriate mentorship program from the community through the
parole’s office. These areas are critical to the offender as they prepare him for reintegration and
from offending again.
