Fuller defines classical school as a theory that explains human behavior is rational
that is everyone has a reason to behave in the way he or she behaves. It states that juveniles
choose to commit crimes out of their own free will. In this regard, the decision to commit a
crime is based on the pleasure or the pain associated with the crime (Fuller, 2016). The
Positive school, on the other hand, believes that individual behavior is beyond his or her
control. There are other factors outside the free will that make people behave the way they
do. Early positivists believed that they are biological factors that influenced people's
behaviors. These biological factors can further be split into sociological and psychological
factors, for example, peer pressure is a social factor together with family and school
relationships (Fuller, 2016). I think the positive school explain juvenile diligence in a better
way because in as much as a person has decided to commit a crime out of own free will, there
are other external factors that are in control when making such a decision some of which may
be influenced from friends and family or the environment that one is brought up in.

SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY AND MERTON'S FIVE MODES OF ADAPTATION

2

Explain how both social learning theory and Merton's five modes of adaptation attempt
to explain juvenile delinquency. Which do you think does a better job at explaining
juvenile crime? Why?
The social learning theory states the contact aired on the social media can have a
negative impact on the children who are watching. If the children watch violent TV shows
and criminal investigation shows, they will tend to become violent and they will also involve
themselves in criminal activities. This is because children at a tender age like to imitate what
they see and hear. From this, it is correct to conclude that the criminal behaviour that is
observed in children is because of imitation (Fuller, 2016). On the other hand, the Merton
model of adaptation includes conformity, ritualism, rebellion, innovation and retreatism.
Conformity implies accepting the laid down cultural goals and means of achieving success.
Ritualism means accepting the means but rejecting the goals. Innovation is where one accepts
the goals but not the means. Retreatism means rejecting both the goals and the means.
Rebellion means rejecting both the goals and means and replacing them with own goals and
means. In my opinion, the social learning theory best explains juvenile delinquency because
it indicates how the crime culture is created in young people that are by constantly watching
crime scenes on the television.
