1. The matrix and Hinduism
The Matrix movie is very parallel to the notions and beliefs of Hinduism in different aspects. We
can say that the fundamental nature of Bhagavad Gita and the ideas from Vedas inspired the story in the
film. In the first scene, we see Neo sleeping at his computer contemplating the world he lives in and
seeking answers. Later, in the nightclub, Trinity approaches him and says to him, “It’s the problem that
compels us Neo … it’s the query that got you at this juncture.” She goes on and tells him, ‘the answers
are out here, and if you want to they will find you1.’ The idea of Maya also called fantasy inspires this
part. The scripture says that we can find the truth anywhere, but if we allow ourselves to swim in the
ocean of delusion, we can only arise if we want to (Gita, 10 1-3).’ Hinduism also highlights the idea of a
‘guru’, one who leads his disciples to achieve spiritual perfection. In the matrix, we see the guru of Neo
is Morpheus, who walks Neo in the paths of reality. That is why Neo takes the red pill so that Morpheus
can guide him. A guru’s purpose is to direct, but the student is accountable for their own decisions also
called karma. Morpheus brings Neo to the Oracle, he says this to him, ‘my duty is to take you to the
door, but you have to walk through it.’
