Impressionism was ‘born’ in Paris in 1874 during an exhibition of new paintings when a
diverse group of painters defiantly set up their own exhibition. The painters, among them Monet,
Degas, Renoir, and Pissarro, were initially rejected by the art establishment. The artists had refused
to accept the official exhibitions that were sanctioned by the government and instead aimed at
capturing the sensory and momentary effects of a scene; the impression made by objects to the eye
(Modern Art, 2016).
