The speaker, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a clear introduction of self and person/event. As
he describes, the location of the event was Lincoln Memorial and what the American statesman
had signed 100 of years ago is yet to become a reality. To quote King’s exact words, “Five score
years ago, a great American , in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the
Emancipation Proclamation” (275).King was however optimistic that things will one day change
and become as per the emancipation proclamation advocated.
A thesis was statement was provided in the introduction. The author, in a sentence, stated the
main idea of the speech. Essentially, the speech was to describe the condition of discrimination
or slavery in the country, years after Lincoln had signed the emancipation proclamation to end
slavery. In the speech, the thesis statement is “….. And so we have come here today to dramatize
a shameful condition” (275). That was indeed the main idea of the speech; to enable the audience
ponder over the discrimination issue and call for commitment of the countrymen to end the
injustice-- which King believed would one day end.
A positive ethos was established. The speaker made an appeal to ethics. He convinced the
audience that the discrimination would cease. He quoted the constitution and its authority to
grant all men –of all creed and color—rights to liberty, life and pursuit of happiness. He supplied
enough background material. In addition to reminding the audience of the emancipation
proclamation, the person who signed it, the year and its meaning, he mentioned the towns and
