Write a well-thought-out paragraph telling me about one aspect of this episode that you found surprising and why? One aspect that its very fascinating from the episode is the idea of a “totagrade” an animal smaller than the head point of a pen and has survived in the world since the start of the world. It is also fascinating that the animals have been living for about 500 million years, more years than human life on earth (Tyson). For every one person, there are about 1 billion of the animals. Another astonishing fact about them is that they can survive naked in the vacuum of space. They can also survive in volcanos, deep in the oceans and every other place on the universe. 4. (10pts) Describe the balance of informing, educating, and entertaining in this episode giving specific examples (This should be 2-3 sentences.) In the episode, informing takes the main part of the episode, spanning at least 50% of the episode. On the other hand, educating takes 30% of the video whereas entertaining takes 20% of the episode. This is because most of the episode contains fascinating information about plants – nature of photosynthesis; fascinating information about animals – “totagrade”; fascinating information about the nature of the sun; new information about the nature of the comet orchid flower and many others. The episode covers few amount of educational information because it talks about known things such as photosynthesis, but talks about it in a deeper way, helping the viewer to understand better. 5. (18pts) Think of someone in your life who had limited scientific knowledge or interest. Take one topic discussed in the episode and describe some tangible way you would explain that concept to your non-science friend. I.e. take a concept from the episode and find another creative way to explain that concept. For example, if I were to explain evolution to a non-science friend, I would talk about how like dogs, cats are evolved from wild-progenitors and have adapted to live amongst humans. You may need to look at outside resources, which is fine, just make sure you cite your sources! One concept I can teach to my non-science friend is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process that utilizes the sun’s heat and light as energy, just like humans use fire to cook their meals. Plants have chlorophyll, a substance that helps plants to trap sunlight and heat. Chlorophyll is comparable to gas, coal, firewood, charcoal, and such things that humans use to produce heat. Once the plants have trapped heat, it is used to break down carbon dioxide molecules into water, sugar, and oxygen. This is a similar process to the cooking of food such that the different food ingredients blend and form a pleasant meal. The cooking process also produces water, which escapes as moisture and food. As such, photosynthesis can be said to be the cooking process of plants, helping them to generate sugars, which aid in their growth and development. • Provide evidence as to why the animal has become endangered and emphasize the effects of habitat loss. What is being proposed to save its habitat? What is currently known on this animal’s potential for survival? • Provide facts about the animal species, how it is classified, its natural habitat. Include country/ies of origin, type of habitat, classification and what are the general properties of this animal and the family, order, and/or class it belongs. • What are the current strategies in place or in planning to save this animal? What does the zoo have to do to maintain the animal? Identify and discuss if the zoo or other scientists are doing research to save this animal. • Describe what is being done in the country of origin, and by scientists or other groups who may be from different countries. Are these efforts being coordinated or is survival of the animal not possible? • Make a prediction for the future. Make this prediction based on your research and observations. • Remember, you must use references and cite them properly for your position paper and your infographic. Saving the Scimitar-Horned Oryx

Student’s Name
Institutional Affiliation

The Scimitar-horned oryx is named after its long and curved horns. It is presently thought
to be extinct in the wild. It has been hunted over the years to near extinction for its meat and hide.
The Scimitar-horned oryx has a stocky pale-colored body, brown markings on the head and a
reddish-brown neck and chest. Its natural habitat is in sub-desert areas. It prefers areas with
climates ranging between the Sahel and a true desert, living in the dunes and the wooded areas
between grassy steppes and dunes. It was once the most common animal in the Saharan desert,
largely found in Chad, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Mauritania and Sudan. Due to extensive hunting,
its population dwindled exponentially in the 20th century so that by 1980, ...
