Milestone One: Job Offer Comparison [] Congratulations on graduating with your bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University! A new array of opportunities is open to you, but which will you choose, and how will it impact your life? Select your discipline area of interest and examine the set of jobs you have applied to and received offer letters for to determine which one best fits your needs and wants. Employment Opportunity Analysis In this section of your milestone, you will focus on the opportunities presented in the discipline area of interest to you. Compare the opportunity as instructed below: Outline the characteristics that are most important to you in a job search, and explain why. Characteristics that are most important to me in a job are distance, salary, benefits, and environment. Distance because I do not want to have to travel for over an hour to work and from work, 30-45 minuets is reasonable. Salary because I need to be able to afford my living expenses and etc. Benefits because I do not want to work a job that would require like 6 months to a year before I’m allowed time off; and I want to be able to have vacation paid or not but a paid one would be a plus. Health, eye, and car insurance would be nice as well. Last but definitely not least the environment is probably the most important to me because my happiness in all things matter to me. I can work in a stressed in environment but I want to be able to feel good at the end of the workday and not leave on the verge of tears or wanting a drink after. Location: I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. The technical writer position is in Sacramento, California. This is exactly 2,296 miles away from my home. I personally would be willing to relocate IF I had the means to do so. I have no family in California, and I actually still live at home with my mother. It would not be wise for me live on my own for the first time across the county where I’m completely alone. This is the case for all three positions. The Feature Journalist position in Kansas City, Missouri is 589 miles from home, and the Social Media Specialist position in New York, New York is 644 miles from home. I would have to relocate for all three positions. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Cincinnati is $540 per month. In Sacramento, the average is $776 per month. In Kansas City the average is $663; and in New York, New York the average is $1,397 per month. Just by comparing average rent costs I can see that if I were to relocate to any three of these jobs the living expenses would be higher than staying home in Cincinnati. I did some research on the average cost of moving if I was to relocate to any of these three options also. Using the website www.moving.com, I came to the conclusion that if I was to move from Cincinnati to Sacramento, the average cost would be between $3,518 and $4,913. If I were to move from Cincinnati to Kansas City, the average cost would be between $2,385 and $3,233. If I were to relocate from Cincinnati to New York, New York, the average cost to move would be between $2,516 and $3,429. Salary Find the occupational area on BLS.gov and compare the salary ranges for each job. Specifically, answer the following in your comparison: According to BLS.gov, the annual salary in Sacramento is $81,060. The annual salary for the Technical Writer position is $46,865. The annual salary for this position is $34,195 less than the overall annual salary in Sacramento. I’m not sure if I like this or not. I would be making way below average if my calculations were correct. The annual salary in Kansas City is $72,000. The annual salary for the Journalist position is $27,000. This is also significantly lower than the average (45,000 less). The annual salary in New York is 57,150. The annual salary for the Social Media Specialist is $38,000. This is not as bad as the other two comparisons (19,150 less). I honestly think if my calculations are correct then I wouldn’t be getting paid as much as I should be. The Journalist and the Social Media Specialist job offer letters both provided me with their annual salaries. The Technical writer job offer letter only provided me with the hourly pay of $25.75. I calculated the annual salary by multiply the amount of hours I would work in a week (35) by the hourly pay (25.75), and then multiplied the total by the number of weeks in a year (52). I do not believe any of my job offerings provides how much of a raise I will get each year so my calculations will be based on what I found on the BLS.gov. If the annual salary of a Social Media Specialist in New York, New York is $38,000 then my starting income after taxes will be $26,600 (38,000 x 70%). If my salary in 5 years increases to the average $67,790 then after taxes my income will be $46,097.2 (67,790 x 68%). If the annual salary of the Journalist position in Kansas City, Missouri is $27,000, then my starting income after taxes will be $18,900 (27,000 x 70%). In 5 years if my salary increases to $84,190 then my income after taxes will be $57,249.2 (84,190 x 68%). If the annual salary for the Technical Writer in Sacramento, California is $46,865, then my starting income after taxes will be $32,805.5 (46,865 x 70%). If my salary increases in 5 years to $91,050, then my income at that time will be $61,914 (91,050 x 68%). I would probably use the mean to calculate my expected salary because I feel like people working in different positions will have a salary based on the level of importance of their position for the company; so I couldn’t use just a few salaries for people working the same position to get my salary. For example, If I were offered the highest paid position in a company below the CEO, then I wouldn’t fine the average salary of people only working entry-level positions to calculate my own expected salary. I believe it would make more sense to find the average of the whole company’s salary instead. Benefits Compare the benefits and retirement packages of each opportunity, calculating theoretical retirement savings if applicable. Consider the following: Determine the retirement savings you will have in 5, 10, and 20 years considering the retirement options provided by each employer in the job opportunity letters. If your employer matches your contributions, assume you will put aside the maximum that the employer will match; if the employer does not have a retirement option, assume you will put aside 5% of your pre-tax salary each year. Explain how you got your results. Compare the amount of insurance costs each employer covers and how much you would be expected to cover. Be sure to consider your personal situation such as children who need coverage and how much the family plans will save/cost you.
