Student Presentations EOSC 123 – Fall 2025 GENERAL GUIDELINES: The first step is to choose a species that you would like to give a short talk about. As discussed in lecture, you should navigate to the Student Presentations Sign-up Sheet (the Google Doc link is on Blackboard, in the Laboratory folder), and choose an organism and date to do your presentation. Each student will present their short talk to the class using PowerPoint (or similar presentation program). Presentations will take place during designated lab periods, and should be approximately 4 to 5 MINUTES in duration. Because this is such a short presentation, you should focus on the most interesting aspects of this species’ biology, and what you would most like your classmates to know about it. This could include: (1) The common and scientific name of the species (2) How the organism feeds and what it feeds on (discuss any specialized structures) (3) How the organism reproduces (4) How the organism protects itself from predators (5) What environment the organism lives in (think about the unique characteristics and stresses of this environment) (6) What sort of adaptations the organism has to live in its environment (7) Other interesting information (commercial uses, threats, population status) CHOOSING YOUR SPECIES: Again, be sure to access the shared class Google Doc, where you can ‘claim’ your species (no duplicates in any given lab section), and take note of the day you are presenting. The Google doc link is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19zecyCluqKE9VePKDtsJKebHGayOXfL4Z8LFgEI3P RE/edit?gid=0#gid=0 Presentations are worth 20 points towards your lab grade. UPLOADING YOUR PRESENTATION TO CANVAS: Be sure to upload your presentation to Canvas at least 24 hours before your scheduled presentation, so that I have time to load it onto the lab computer that day. PRESENTER TIPS: 1) Less text is more! Pictures are great, with just a few bullet points to highlight your ideas. 2) Make text and images large and easily visible. 3) Be sure to rehearse your talk beforehand, so that you stay within the time limit. Aim for 4.5 minutes, with 30 seconds left over for questions. 4) Don’t try to cover too much – think about what is most interesting about your species. 5) Feel free to run your presentation by your instructor during office hours (preferably) beforehand, so he can spot any obvious problems. 6) A ‘References’ slide is not needed. 7) Finally, have fun! This is a low-stress opportunity to get some public speaking experience.
