Masculinity in the Workplace Needs a Rethink
“Be a Man”? Says Who?
You walk into work. You keep your head high, emotions low. You compete. You never
cry. Sound familiar?
That’s the version of masculinity that gets rewarded at work: be tough, be in control, be
the leader. But guess what? That’s not the only way to be a man.
There’s more than one way to lead. Some men guide with empathy. Some listen more
than they speak. Some don’t even want to dominate.
So why does the workplace only make room for one type?
Toxic Norms, Real Harm
Work culture often says “be aggressive,” “don’t show feelings,” “don’t ask for help.”
That means a lot of men wear masks. Pretend. Bottle it all up. And that pressure? It can
break people.
Men are taught to perform. To keep proving they’re "man enough." But who makes those
rules—and who gets hurt when they’re followed?
