The constitution protects individual rights and freedom of religion (Berns, 1976). Every
student’s work is displayed in the classroom to share knowledge and learn from each other. The
situation the teacher encounters, in this case, is with displaying and grading of a student’s work
where he or she depicted Jesus as the hero and made a drawing of the last supper. This paper
discusses the legal issues on displaying and grading of such a student’s essay and ways the first
amendment of the constitution applies in the situation.
Legal issues and the first amendment
The first amendment protects the right of every American citizen freedom to speak and
think freely. If a teacher decides to fail the student or not display their drawing to the class, it
will be violating the student’s freedom of thoughts and expression (Freeman, 1984). The student
thinks of Jesus as their hero; they have the freedom to think and express their thoughts as per the
