Crisis Management in Healthcare
Recently, the United States and the world, in general, has seen a rise in terrorist attacks
such as mass shootings and natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes resulting in mass
casualties. Such occurrences are unexpected and therefore difficult, if not impossible to
anticipate and include in plans. Though such crises affect different institutions, hospitals and
other healthcare facilities are the hardest hit. These institutions receive significantly high
numbers of patients and often lack the capacity to deal with such numbers of casualties.
Consequently, it is essential that healthcare facilities prepare for such eventualities by ensuring
the constant development and evaluation of crisis management plans. This essay discusses crisis
management in healthcare using a hypothetical crisis to evaluate the preparedness of healthcare
institutions to mitigate such crises.
Following the increased cases of terrorism in the United States evident in the rising
number of incidences involving mass public shootings, an act of terrorism is the hypothetical
crisis addressed in this essay. The assumption is that a mass shooting resulting in a considerable
number of casualties, most of them seriously injured, occurred near the healthcare institution in
question. The proximity of the facility to the location of the shootings makes it the obvious
choice for their treatment and all casualties are rushed there for treatment. As a manager at the
institution, I am in charge of creating the crisis management plan for the nursing home, a task
which is bound to prove daunting given that the institution’s primary service is long-term care
rather than emergency services.

Natural disasters, terrorism and other events likely to cause crises in the nursing home are
usually unexpected and therefore difficult to plan for in advance. Consequently, their occurrence
is bound to result in inadequate resources, both in terms of medical supplies, bed capacity, and
human resources, an assertion Geale, in her publication on the Journal of Disaster Prevention and
Management (2012) reinforces. Consequently, the decision regarding the distribution of these
resources and capacities to cater for the expected high number of casualties while at the same
time ensuring that the resident patients receiving long-term care in the nursing home are not
neglected is likely to cause ethical dilemmas. As the manager in charge, I plan on ensuring
effective resource management based on the utilitarian approach, an ethical approach which
according to Scott (2017) would entail u...
