What I think is key here is that science fiction can do more than just present us with alternative technologies — it can also depict alternative social, economic, and political systems. (This is where SF starts to overlap with utopian and dystopian fiction.)

Let me ask you this: What do you think are the most important differences between our own social and economic systems and those in Piercy’s novel?

Running Head: ART AND HISTORY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE 1 How would you describe the politics of each of the texts for this unit? Whatever you think the political theme of these texts might be, how do they use the classic SF techniques (e.g., extrapolation, a novum that creates an alternative world, etc.) to help convey that political theme? Marge Piercy, Woman on the Edge of Time Stories from the The Oxford Book of Science Fiction: McAuley, “Karl” Brin, “Piecework” ART AND HISTORY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE 2 Introduction A thematic influence of political thoughts through text and scripts acts as historical standing sculptures which define evolution and advancement of political arenas in different nations United States included. Ideally, such texts are meant to address some of the plausible decision or asperities that come with caveats of political decision makings by leaders which influence its citizens (Lovejoy, 2017). This case study will focus on three scripts of Marge Piercy: Woman on the Edge of Time, Stories from the “The Oxford Book of Science Fiction and finally McAuley, “Karl” Brin, “Piecework.” Description of Political Texts- Marge Piercy: Woman on the Edge of Time Marge is a landmark feminist author who articulated her book with saving current situation to meet imaginative utopia. This means extrapolating our energy and improves our advancement today to mitigate and control tomorrow’s contingencies. Marge had an intrinsic drive to women political awakening and their acumen status in society which was practicing feminism. She advocated for egalitarian society thus disregarding some of the asperities related to employment, health status, and human labor in different sectors. This was during the era of radical ferment where she instigated women’s movement to gain real momentum. This was a fight for rights which has always been scrapped by Congress and Legislature. In summary Marge in her fight against women oppression and benighted laws reshaped the order of social existence where restoration of faith from career, societal positions, and carnal harassment was achieved (Piercy, 2016). The Oxford Book of Science Fiction Its endeavor is meant to discern the historical and cultural shape of Science Fiction brought about by the advent of techno-culture discipline thus drawing an existential correlation ART AND HISTORY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE 3 between science fiction and revolutionary technology and culture. This genre indicates how SF has brought continuous change in the realm of science and technology in society today thus addressing major themes of Science Fiction as a Genre, Medium and finally Culture. SF as a “Genre” tries to build history from the early Second World War II which was seen to redefine the renaissance and restructuring of historical shape to liberalization and secularism in religious belief of people. Indifferently, Science fiction as a medium shows creativity on social articulations through artistic amusements of political fantasies. This is where the corrosive nature of political spheres which gave predictable future war through the spread of propaganda in the media mainstream. This created political speculations through which they would be used to determine changes which affected society at large. Lastly, SF as Culture addresses “Cultural” issues by redefining cultural alliances, social movements and historical advancements that were used to bring change in society through series of the speculative evolution of Utopia and Dystopia (Moylan, 2018). McAuley, “Karl” Brin, “Piecework.” Karl Brin heavily contributed to political metaphors through series of reforms in electoral reforms and voting system to address some of the contentious issues that affect people. One of the major themes addressed in his art of life is historical depression and exclusivity on political issues. Neglecting of economic realities led to dispute and labor issues affecting society who relied on farming and other agricultural activities for their sustenance (Rizvi, 2015). Therefore, this script among others advocated for such rights to ensure racism and depression are addressed. Use of arts and articles was the best platform.
