Module 2 - Case MOBILIZING SUPPORT FOR HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS Assignment Overview You are a health educator for a local children’s hospital that wishes to partner with schools in the area on an initiative to encourage healthier eating habits among students and staff alike. A visit to a local school site to explore partnership reveals that teachers and staff may be reluctant to make changes to their own eating habits. For example, when asked (during an impromptu meeting with a small group of teachers) about her willingness to replace existing vending machine options with healthier ones, one teacher remarked, “Now you’re going after my soda and cookies. What’ll it be next?” Her colleagues appear to agree with her on this. Strategies for Achieving ‘Buy-In' from Stakeholders

A successful initiative requires the support of all stakeholders at various levels and in the
different phases of the program be it when seeking grants, implementing the program, or later in
the evaluation stages. Stakeholder characterization and roles vary; however, they can broadly be
described as those are likely to be affected or may have some form of effect on a program, or
those that may be having an interest in a given initiative. Three main categories of stakeholders
do exist, and the difference is in the amount of effect or input that they have on the assigned
program, the primary stakeholders are directly affected by it in a positive or a negative manner,
the secondary stakeholders are the individuals or groups that are indirectly affected by the said
initiative (CTB, 2018 b). Lastly, the key stakeholders can be either directly or indirectly affected
by the said initiative and are essential to the organization, or institution that is engaged in the said
effort (CTB, 2018 b).

To get the different stakeholders on board will ensure that the initiative is successful. An
understanding of who the stakeholders are in the program is the initial step in getting support, it
helps the team get to know the target and in turn, lay out the right approach depending on the
stakeholder group. After understanding the stakeholder it is essential to analyze them, that entail
getting more information on the stakeholder groups. By identifying and analyzing the
stakeholders more information will be made available, it will provide more perspective, and in
general, will ensure that the initiative has better success. Knowing the potential stakeholders is
also crucial to the exercise.
