Persuasive Message Assignment *Pair up with a classmate for this assignment Objective: Create a mailer/ flier/ promotional piece for Morgan State University. The propaganda aims to encourage high school juniors and seniors to apply to the University. Format: The format of this assignment is arbitrary, meaning that it is up to you to design it. You control the visuals, the layout, the format, and the copy (text). Think about who your audience is and how this will be read. Grading: Your piece will be evaluated on how well it applies the AIDA format to a limited space. Make sure that the work is balanced, that it is not too heavily visual or overly wordy. Ultimately, you must look at your final product with a discriminating eye to make sure that it is aesthetically pleasing and informative. Your advertisement MUST include both text and visuals. If you do not include both, then you will not get credit for the assignment. Remember: You must get the students to act. This means not only that you must employ tactics discussed in class, but also that you tell the reader what you want him/her to do. *This is a 1980s DIY flier for the punk band Bad Brains. Notice that grotesque image serves to illustrate the band’s name and appeal to the teenage audience members. There are specific instructions as to what the reader is to do. Because this is from 1982, it is hand-done. Modern technology allows for much more polished work. (In other words, yours should be done on a computer and printed). **When the comedy magazine National Lampoon was failing, it created this cover to boost sales. Subsequently, it became their most sold issue in the magazine’s history. Although the idea of killing a dog is horrific, the human-like expression on the dog’s face, the allusion to the infamous My Lai Massacre during the Viet Nam War, and the absurdity of the picture promoted National Lampoon’s mature and irreverent brand of comedy. It does, however, somehow encapsulate the AIDA format with a minimalist approach. Note: I AM NOT SUGGESTING THIS APPROACH. There is a world of difference between selling a comedy magazine and getting people to apply to college. Moreover, advertising an HBCU with a gun pulled would quickly be rejected as racist and degrading. *** This type of flier is indicative of what is seen on college campuses. Note that the performer’s image consumes almost half the flier, and his posture and expression are not intriguing enough to warrant a second glance. Notice, also, that the event itself “Howard’s Homecoming” is covered with red script, as though it is crossed out, making the event itself hard to read. Overall, the whitespace in this flier is haphazard and the layout has a sense of just being thrown together. This flier is ineffective and something like this would not earn a good grade on this project.
