Question 1
Preterm births and low-weight births continue to affect different races
disproportionately in the U.S. In a study to compare preterm births among black and white
women, a higher incident of preterm births was recorded among the black women than the
white. The black women have a 12.7% likelihood while the white women recorded an 8.0%
(McKinnon, et al., 2015 ). The difference is alarming as premature births are one of the
leading factors in perinatal mortality, again, it causes developmental challenges in the later
life of a child. The disparity is attributed to social-economic challenges among the blacks
including; poverty, crime, racial discrimination and adverse health habits. On the other hand,
low-weight births of between 6.8%-7.6% were established between Asian Indian, black, and
Filipino women while 3.4%-3.7% among whites, Chinese and Korean women (Abramo,
2017). The disparity owes to differences in maternal education, pregnancy complication, and
smoking habits.
