Classifying and Treating Inmates
Correctional facilities are an integral part of the society since they aid in rehabilitation of
offenders. In every society there are people who go against the social norms hence the
importance of correctional facilities to ensure there is sanity in society. There are various
methods of handling inmates. The seven types of inmate rehabilitation treatments are:
•
Psychological
•
Behavior
•
Social
•
Educational/Vocational
•
Substance abuse
•
Sex offender
•
Religious
In this paper, five of the seven treatment methods will be discussed and the mode of classifying
offenders using the various methods will be delineated. Some of the aspects on the treatment
methods that will be discussed include the conditions treated by the program, limitations of the
program, type of offenders suited for the program and the effectiveness of the programs. In
conclusion, the paper will discuss one of the rehabilitative treatment programs in terms of its
impact and society’s view of offender rehabilitation within the last ten years.
Educational/Vocational treatment

necessary skill that the prisoners can put into practice once they finish their sentences. The
vocational treatment method also comes in handy as it ensures prisoners have something that
keeps them busy instead of just wasting time in the correction facilities.
The scope of the educational/vocational treatment program is widespread with any prisoner who
has the ability to learn being a viable candidate. There are many programs being conducted under
the vocational treatment method of rehabilitation. Some of the inmates in prisons were unable to
finish school and they prefer to enroll to classes. Teaching in correction facilities has had a huge
success rate and some of the inmates end up furthering the studies they get once they are set free
(Polaschek, 2014). Other programs under the vocational treatment method include some practical
skills such as carpentry, mechanics, masonry and construction.
The prisoners end up attaining skills that are of value to them and this motivates them to turn
their lives around from committing crimes. The skills they get can help them get honest earnings
and hence they can sustain themselves and their families. In prison those offenders who have
gained the necessary skills can work and earn some little pay based on the prison rates that can
help them have a slightly better life in the correction fac...
