Healthcare Career Paper on Dental Hygiene
Job Description
Dental hygienists provide specialized services aimed at preventing and treating oral
infections and protecting the total health of the patient. They are among the first oral health
professionals among the dental team to offer services to a patient including administration of
prophylaxis as well as X-rays. In achieving this goal, they provide services such as oral
assessment that includes the general screening of the patient, reviewing of the dental history,
gum evaluation, and dental charting among others. They also provide education to the general
public on the most popular oral hygiene strategies for maintenance of oral health. Dental
hygienists are also responsible for applying preventive materials like fluorides, and sealants to
the teeth of the patient. They perform nonsurgical periodontal therapy as well as periodontal
maintenance care (Consumer Guide to Dentistry, 2018). The state laws and regulatory boards are
responsible for the establishment of the scope of practice of dental hygienists including
procedures to perform, supervisory levels, and areas they can provide their services. In most
circumstances, dental hygienists have to work in the offices of a dentist. They can work for
multiple dentists as part-time employees since the dentist can hire them for a few days in a week.
Because of the variations in legislation, some states require an authorization from the dentist or
his presence before the provision of protective services by the hygienist (National Governors
Association, 2014).
The code of ethics helps in the establishment of standards of behavior for guiding the
expectation of the public on the dental hygiene profession and supporting the current practices
and legislation. The fundamental principles provide the basis for the code of ethics. It includes
