1. Discuss the relationship between strain theory and the common held idea that crime
is an inner-city problem.
The strain theory holds that certain stressors or strains have the effect of increasing the
tendency of an individual to commit a crime (Lin 56). Examples of stressors include the inability
to reach one’s goals, an exposure to negative stimuli, or a loss of positive stimuli. As a result of
the exposure to the strains, individuals may become upset and consequently turn to crime as a
way of coping with the frustrations caused by the stressors. Precisely, people may want to
achieve their goals by using illegitimate means. The idea that crime is an inner-city problem is
based on the fact that people living in the city are subjected to more strains and stressors than
those living in the rural areas. For instance, financial constraints and the expensive life in the city
put people into economic pressures hence making them to easily turn to criminal activities in an
effort to cope with the high standards of living.
