Introduction
Bad parenting has been claimed to have a negative impact on children and more so
adolescents. One of the factors that have been blamed for juvenile delinquency has been poor
parenting styles and parental absence. Studies have shown that parenting styles are often
developed before even the first child is born and that they become implemented during the first
year of a child’s life. Parenting is assumed to play a critical role in the child’s life such as
controlling their behavior, teaching and disciplining them so that they can be able to adhere to
the societal norms that have been accepted over time. Therefore, teaching them that some traits
are bad such as stealing is considered good parenting. What then entails bad parenting and how
does parenting behavior impact the outcome of an individual and more so their susceptibility to
being involved in criminal activities?
The topic is useful because with increased studies on the effects of poor parenting has on
children and particularly their delinquent behavior then adjustments can be made to ensure that
some of the factors are eliminated as a result of increased knowledge. Once parents identify their
parenting styles and how this parenting behavior affects their children negatively there is a
higher chance of these parents conforming by the adoption of better parenting styles and
eventually led to the decrease in the juvenile delinquency. One of the dilemmas that will be
addressed in the thesis is the definition of poor parenting styles since that can be a source of
