When a second marriage occurs this changes the structure of the family. The result of this change may cause strife in the family unit and the incoming person may not be accepted, because of the change of family dynamics. "Change requires adaptation of every family member as roles and functions assume new meanings", (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). For instance there may now be a stepmother or father in the home, and the family may not agree on this change at first, but they may adapt later when the come to terms that this may promote happiness in the mother or father. "Change in one part or member of the family results in changes in the family as a whole" (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). The family can learn to function as one with effective communication and verbalization of their feelings and by being respectful of each others' opinions. "Both the couple and their children possess values and beliefs from the past that must integrate within the present union" (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). This means that everyone has something to contribute to the new family, and enables the family to see and respect one another and their differences.
