The Electoral College
The Electoral College is an embarrassment to America’s democracy. It is a
constitutional process of electing the US president through an indirect method. In this case,
voters elect their allocated electors at a number that equals the combined number of senators
and representatives, and with three additional electors being added for the District of
Colombia1. While the voters still elect the president, this popular vote does not count in the
final results as it could be easily turned over by the majority vote in the Electoral College. For
instance, despite winning the popular vote by at least a 2.1% margin over her closest
competitor, Hillary Clinton went on to lose the 2016 presidential election by 227 votes against
334 votes in the Electoral College to Trump2. It is for such reasons that the Electoral College
has been termed an embarrassment to America’s democracy. However, a section of the
American society does not agree with this argument. For instance, the Electoral College has
been termed as a process that safeguards and empowers the smaller states while at the same
time promoting peace in the nation3. However, since the Electoral College defies the
democracy of the majority, an amendment should be made to ensure that the president is
elected through the majority vote. In order to demonstrate the reason for such an amendment,
this paper will outline some of the cons of the Electoral College in the US.

minority president. Since the president is elected by the electors rather than the voters, it is
