Introduction
Poems can be analyzed to understand the various themes that the poet uses to pass their
message to the readers. There is a wide range of themes such as humor, parenthood, connections
in the family, suffering, relationships, love and war among others. A poem can have more than
one theme that the poet uses to convey their message (Ebrahimi and Saljeghe, 2016). In this
essay, the theme of connectedness with family is discussed. The essay focuses on analyzing two
poems which are “Digging” by Seamus Heaney and “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke.
The essay analyzes how these poems show the connection between the poet and their family and
also explains which poem depicts the theme in a better way.
My Papa’s Waltz
This poem was written by Theodore Roethke, and he describes his relationship with his
father and more so the whole of his family. In the first stanza, he shows his relationship with his
father. He explains that his father drinks alcohol and the smell from his breath due to the whiskey
