The Use of Awareness for Reducing the Impact of Child Abuse

The Use of Awareness for Reducing the Impact of Child Abuse
Child abuse is a global problem that occurs in the form of emotional, physical, and sexual
mistreatment of a child or children through the intended or unintended acts by parents or other
caregivers that threaten the survival of children or impair the normal development into
adulthood. It is a social issue that takes places in different environments including the home,
school, communities, or the organizations that afford the child or children an avenue for
interaction with adults. Developed countries such as the United States are investing resources to
end the four categories of child abuse including physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and
emotional abuse by developing and implementing comprehensive laws and policies that
discourage the practice in the society.
Unicef. (2014) stated that while the federal and states governments have institutions and
agencies that prosecute individuals and organization that engage in the various forms of this act,
as well as remove the child, the problem remains a major public health and social challenge.
Therefore, the nation requires new strategic measures for dealing with the adverse impacts of
child abuse on the development of the victims, especially their transition to adulthood. It is an
imperative that the nation can no longer ignore since several studies have shown that children
that suffer the different types of abuse have a greater potential of becoming adult child abusers.
Background Information
While the signs of the existence of child abuse in any environment in the United States
are easily identifiable, the statistical information on the subject is difficult to acquire because of
the difference in the approaches and methods used for the collection of information by the

various agencies and institutions. Also, the refusal of most of the victims and observer of the
various incidents of child abuse to child protection services (CPS) is another dimension to the
challenges of gathering information on the subject. The implication of these situations where the
occurrence of child abuse is underreported is the lack of information on the extent of the problem
and the leading factors responsible for its continued existence in the country (Finkelhor, Turner,
Shattuck, & Hamby, 2015). However, the annual report of the Children’s Bureau of the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Children, Youth, and Families is
considered by scholars and social service professional as the most relevant source of information
