More youths have access and possession of firearms which they acquire as a result of various factors such as the lack of background checks and the existence of the black markets and internet sales. It is becoming evident that the policies proposed and applied by the government are not adequate primarily because of lack of a standard test. The inability to test put the policies on gunfire is hard because of the low-quality data which is also limited. While not all crime and gun violence take place during odd hours usually between 11 P.M. and 6 A.M. Seeing that the problem requires more solutions one of the best solutions would be the introduction of a juvenile curfew. Young people are more prone to engaging in crime and gun violence during the mentioned hours. The enforcement of juvenile curfew will help in the significant reduction of gun violence. On the 1st of October year 2015, a young student, Chris Harper shot 18 people in Umpqua Community College with nine of them dying and the other 9 being wounded (Morris ). He then proceeded to shoot himself in the shootout with the police. Such cases have increased in the recent past with young people opening fire in schools and other public spaces. On the other hand, inner-city crime rates have increased with many of the people involved being gangs composed of young people most of them below the legal age. Gang shootouts and drive-by shootings are also Pickett 2 another sources of the increased gun violence among American youth. In an article published by the Guardian, Sam Morris shows that there have been 1,624 shootings in 1,870 days (Morris ). This alarming number was sourced from the gun violence archive which has also shown that more young people are perpetrators of gun violence. From these statistics, it is clear that gun violence is a problem that requires a long-term solution. It has become a source of concern for parents and the public who feel increasingly unsafe. Additionally, the concern is further propagated by the consequences attached to ignoring the problem of the application of ineffective solutions. Some of the consequences include the increased death rate of young people, increase in crime-related activities in cities and urban areas and also the increased possession of illegal firearms (McGee, Logan and Samuel ). Lack of safety in cities further affects the level of productivity in the city and thus directly impacts the economic growth in the city and country. Increased death of the young people also robs the country of the skills and contribution of young people to the future of the country. It limits the level of growth since young people are attributed to having fresh ideas, and it also leads to a vicious cycle whereby the youth that gets entangled in criminal activities fail to complete their high school diplomas and also fail to get a higher education. Subsequently, they become more susceptible to leaving below the poverty line due to the lack of proper jobs that compensate them well and lack of benefits. A solution to this problem and consequently an elimination of the mentioned consequences in the introduction of juvenile curfew. Youth curfew is a regulation that is enforced for a group of people, in this case, the young people below the age of 18 for specific hours usually between 11pm and 6am. Introducing a curfew for teenagers reduces the rate of crime and gun violence significantly. For starters, these young people are required to stay in their homes during the Pickett 3 specified times and thus cannot be in a position to take part in criminal activities (Fritsch , Caeti and Taylor ). Curfew limits the freedom of the young people, but it also limits their ability to engage in unlawful behavior such indulging in alcohol and causing disorder in the society. Peer pressure is a huge influence on many young people and being in spaces that pushed them to engage in behavior they would otherwise not do increase with increased peer pressure. For instance, joining gangs and engaging in behavior that paves the way for the use of guns and violence such a substance abuse can be reduced by having the teenagers remain within their households at those odd hours. The aim is to have them occupied with alternative activities, and since they attend school during the day, it is likely that they acquire and even engage in illegal activities after school hours. Implementation of the solution would require communication of the curfew in advance to ensure that all the residents are aware of the curfew time period. Police officers would then require all the young people outside their homes past 11 pm to show their identification cards and if they are causing trouble they should be arrested. Juvenile curfew works as a result of incapacitation. Young people are limited or incapacitated form having the opportunity to get into trouble seeing that they are under the control of their parents and guardians. While critics argue that curfews including juvenile curfews only further strain the relationships between the law enforcement officers and the local community, it is a solution that will aid in the reduction of gun violence among the youth. The most common punishment for violating the curfew is the payment of a fine to the local government or city government/council. Overall, the distrust in communities and the level of fear among people as a result of the increased crime rates and gun violence warrants a long-lasting solution. Policies changes have helped in reducing the rates, but a more effective solution would be in the introduction of youth Pickett 4 curfews. Studies have shown that cities that have enforced the regulation have seen a significant reduction in gun violence. Juvenile curfew works by incapacitation meaning that the youth are limited from engaging in crime and gun violence. The enforcement of juvenile curfew will help in the significant reduction of gun violence. Works Cited: Fritsch , Eric, Tory Caeti and Robert Taylor .
