Introduction
Saint Leo University is a nonprofit, private, catholic liberal arts university that was
established in the year 1889. The University’s primary campus is situated in Florida, St. Leo. It is
one of the largest catholic universities in the United States.
It usually enrolls students via the university’s center for online learning as well as at the
university’s traditional campus. This ensures that students from different parts of the country end
up being able to apply for a chance to join the university. Diversity is evident at the University
since currently, it provides higher education to students from all the 50 state as well as from
more than 80 countries.
Student population at the University has kept on rising year after year. This is majorly
attributed to the fact that the university has been consistent with regard to producing top
performing graduates over the years. As of spring 2017, the University’s total student enrollment
was 16,207 students. Other than focusing on academic performance, the University also has an
extra curriculum program in place that enables students to be able to focus on other aspects of
their lives such as sports. This is so since, there are several sports personalities who have gone
through the University.
The university was among the first universities in America to offer distance learning
opportunities to students. More than 40 associate, master’s degrees, baccalaureate as well as
certificate programs are being offered at the University. The first doctoral program was
inaugurated at the university in the year 2013. The university has 219 full-time faculties as well

The university traces its history to March 11, 1889 when the Holy name Monastery was
founded. On June, the same year saint Leo College as well as Saint Leo abbey were founded.
The doors of the St. Leo’s College which is the original name of saint Leo University were
opened in September of 1890 with the first student to enroll at the university being a twelve year
old student. The first students to graduate from the university did so in June 1893 after attaining
a masters of accounts degree.
The University is among the first learning institutions in America to abolish
discrimination by color of skin. This is so since even before the Florida state had legalized black
& white students to be attend school together the university had already enrolled a black student
from Cuba. In an effort to acknowledge these Benedictines, the university honored them with a
sculpture entitled A Spirit of Belonging.
As time went by, the University had to adopt new ways of offering education to students
so as to ensure that those who got a chance to pass through the university’s educational system
will end up having update knowledge needed to excel in life. The University also changed its
name from time to time as the number of course it was able to offer increased.
