Benefits of Gaming
The myth surrounding video games and other form of gaming is that it contributes to the
development of addictive behaviors and increases the potential of the players to be socially
isolated. Aside from these common fears about the negative social consequences of gaming,
some school of thought subscribe to the notion that the extended active participation in session
result in weight gain through unhealthy eating habits that eventually results in obesity.
Unfortunately, all the fears and conclusions are untrue since the scientific evidence to support
this line of argument are mostly non-existent or unsubstantiated. However, there strong scientific
evidence to show that gaming can be beneficial because it brings out the creative side of the
players; increases eye/hand coordination, and provide an escape from everyday life.
It increases the creative skills of the players the efforts for completing the steps and
processes for the quests and obstacles for the various levels of the games require critical thinking
and effective decision-making. According to Chiappe and his colleagues, the outcome of a study
conducted by them revealed that players that participate in 50 hours of gaming exhibit improved
performance in a test used for determining the capacity of aircraft pilots. Also, gaming is
observed to increase the functioning of the part of the brain that is required for the flexibility to
consider various aspects of problem (280). It is the part that is responsible for creative thinking,
perception and focus on the various dimensions of an issue, which are elements of cognitive

capacities that are useful and important for developing solutions to complex problems and
challenges. Therefore, the assertion by the critics of video games and other gaming platforms
that the practice is responsible for the development of violent behaviors is untenable and lacks
the right evidence.
Gaming increases eye/hand coordination is an additional benefit of gaming that can be
used to dispute the claims of critics because of the role of the sessions in the improvement of
spatial attention. Green and Bavelier wrote that action video games are useful for developing the
ability of an individual to locate and quickly target specific stimulus despite a series of
distractions to the person’s eye sight. An additional factor responsible for the improved eye/hand
coordination is the role of the gaming session is the ability of players to track and monitor
visually identical objects that are moving in various directions in a visual field (Eichenbaum,
Daphne, and Shawn 55). This position on the positive effect of gaming is supported by the
outcome of the study conducted by cognitive experts on its effect on the parts of the brain for
motor skills. According to these scholars, the outcome of their experience showed that improve
eye/hand coordination is due to the reduced impulsiveness of the players during participation in
the sessions.
A third and final benefit of gaming is the opportunity that it gives the players to escape
from everyday life. While critics consider this behavior as social isolation and source of the
many problems associated with the habit, this assertion is untrue because of the scientific that
showed how players are non-responsive to non-target stimuli. When one considers that role of
impulse in the commission of some anti-social behaviors and violent crimes, the distractions
provided by videogames should be considered as a major advantage (Green, Shawn, and Daphne
200). An additional support for this aspect of the argument on the benefits of gaming is that the

escape from everyday life is useful for learning new and important skills that can be used in the
workplace and for dealing with some of the challenges of daily living. An example of this
position is the increased mental flexibility of the players that enable them to switch rapidly from
one activity to another with minimal or zero errors including those that are complex and require
equal levels of efficiency. Therefore, the positive cognitive benefits of gaming outweigh the
negative ones that cannot be substantiated by critics.
As a conclusion, it is important to examine the merits of common arguments used for
discrediting the value of gaming in the improvement of the mental, social, and physical abilities
of the gamers. One of the information use is the role of action games with violent scenes and
themes contribute to the demand of anti-social behaviors and practices. These scholars noted that
mental skills required to overcome the obstacles and processes involved in the quests contribute
to the development of criminal and misdemeanor ideas such bullying and assault (Chiappe et al .
282). Aside from the lack of evidence to support these claims, the supporting evidence for the
arguments presented in this paper showed that assertions are untrue and not reflective of the real
impacts of gaming. Finally, extended participation in gaming sessions is useful for building the
components of human intelligence that are essential for the performance of a variety of social
and executive functions in both childhood and adulthood. Therefore, parents should ignore the
myths surrounding and encourage their children to participate in educative and informative
games.
