Begin the chapter with “Communication in the Age of Social Media” (Opening page of
chapter 8). Based on this short text, what points hold the most significance for you?
In this case, it is apparent that social media can affect the way employees perform at the
workplace. In an era where more than 73% of individuals utilize social media for
communication, it is apparent that the employers can fire individuals when they misbehave
online. Several examples have been given in companies such as Chrysler after an employee
posted inappropriate content in social media and a police officer who was fired in Florida for
posting about teenager’s and their parents online. Another issue of concern is whether or not the
employees should be monitored on their usage and application of social media since it has been
identified that they use most of their time using the internet for wrong purposes.
Where have you seen a communication process break down at work? At school?
Some employees fear their bosses to the extent of not asking a question or for
clarification. Others are overconfident and hold on tightly to what they believe. While this is a
communication breakdown which involves vertical communication, it is apparent that other
leaders are too arrogant or full of power to discuss issues with their juniors. For example, a
matron in my recent school was fired for a failure of getting the kids up on time. He had never
failed in his duty. Due to the fear of the manager, he could not express his concerns; thus he lost
