I need it to be done in MLA format with in -text citation and a work cited page. I will attach my last 2 essay's which are the majority of the research. One is my definition essay and the other is my Cause & Effect essay. I am currently waiting on my argumentative essay which I will provide once it is done. I need 10 pages of essay and 1 page of citations. Thank you so much.

Are Viruses Largely Responsible for Cancer?
The topic on the causes of cancer has been an important focal point in medical research
for many decades. A lot of resources have been devoted in trying to establish the actual cause of
cancer. The research on the causes of cancer has increasingly been leveraged by the increased
support of evidence-based medical practices. Governments across the globe fund health research
in an attempt to improve the ability to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases. Cancer is one of the
main causes of mortality across the globe, with its impact heaviest in developing nations where it
accounts for approximately 20% of total deaths in these countries (zur Hausen). According to
Mclaughlin-Drubin and Munger, approximately 10.9 million new cases of cancer infections are
recorded every year, that account for a total of around 6.7 million deaths per year (MclaughlinDrubin & Munger). The devastating nature of the impact of cancer necessitates intensive
research that will aid in the development of prevention and treatment strategies to manage the
disease. However, the development of these strategies requires an in-depth understanding of the
causes and the mechanisms through which cancer develops and spreads. Thus, the research on
the causes of cancer has resulted in the establishment of several causes of cancer. The main
causes of cancer include exposure to toxic chemical compounds, exposure to ionizing radiation,
infectious agents (pathogens), and genetics. Among these causes, infectious agents including
bacteria, viruses and parasites account for approximately 20% of the global cancer (zur Hausen).
The contribution of infectious agents is also recorded by the International Agency in Cancer

Research which also indicates that up to 20% of all cancers are caused by the infectious agents,
majority if which are viruses (Liao). Mclaughlin-Drubin and Munger stated that viruses play a
major role in the development of cancerous cells and that between 15% and 20% of total cancers
worldwide are linked to viral infections (Mclaughlin-Drubin & Munger). According to another
article titled “Viruses and Human Cancer”, approximately 15% of all human cancers are
associated with viruses (Liao). These findings vividly indicate that viruses are major contributors
to cancers compared to the other infectious agents. However, research may lead to new
revelations in which new causes of cancer can be established. For this reason, some scientists
argue that it cannot be conclusively stated that viruses are more associated to cancer than the
other infectious agents. In fact, it may just be a matter of time before more bacteria and parasites
are found to contribute largely to cancer than viruses. Nevertheless, the consistence of results in
the more than decade long research studies confirm the dominance of viral infections in causing
human cancer. Therefore, viruses more largely contribute to cancer than other infectious agents
such as bacteria and parasites as indicated by empirical findings.
First, to assess the contribution of any pathogen in causing a particular disease, an
evaluation of the etiology of the disease is necessary. In this regard, the etiology of cancer
strongly suggests the contribution of viruses in its development. Cancer results from changes that
occur to the DNA within cells. The DNA is basically a package of genes, each of which contains
a set of instructions that determine the functions of the cell, in addition to cell growth and
division (Liao). The changes (mutations) may cause errors in the instructions, consequently
interfering with the normal function of the cell and in worse case scenarios, causing the cells to
become cancerous. Gene mutations may result to the formation of cancerous cells when they
allow rapid cell growth, when they fail to stop uncontrolled cell growth and when they cause

mistakes during repair of DNA errors (Mayo Clinic). Thus, cancer can be viewed to result from
genetic mutations that alter the balance of some cell mechanisms such as apoptosis, cell
proliferation and cell transforma...
