Emancipation Proclamation Extra Credit The Emancipation Proclamation is revered in American history as one of the seminal turning points for African Americans and the path toward freedom. However, when reading the document and understanding its limitations, a better understanding of what it granted often conflicts with popular notions regarding its importance. This is in no way a means to dismiss the importance of the proclamation, rather this assignment is to evaluate and interpret the document and placing it within its proper context in the era in which it was produced. For successful completion of this assignment you will need to fulfill all of the following: ❖ Read the Emancipation Proclamation closely, noting particularly exactly which slaves are being freed ❖ Why do you think the proclamation was issued? Note the year and how the events of the war, as well as political pressures, contributed to its issuance. ❖ How and did the combination of the Civil War, the proclamation, and the veneration of Abraham Lincoln contribute to current misinterpretation of its true purpose? ❖ A final analysis, based upon your own evaluation, of the legacy of the proclamation for African Americans. The document is readily available in many sources, but if you wish to use an internet source, the only accepted version is that found on the National Archives website (http://www.archives.gov/ exhibit_hall/featured_documents/emancipation_proclamation/transcript.html). Be sure to document in your works cited where you read the proclamation. You may consult a scholarly book on the subject of the Emancipation Proclamation to facilitate your understanding of the limitations and reverence toward this document. Additionally, you may also wish to consider viewing pamphlets produced by abolitionists in the 1862 and 1863 to understand how those contemporaries view the proclamation. These pamphlets are readily available by searching the Library of Congress’ American Memory website, simply search using “Emancipation Proclamation” (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html). Your paper must be at least 2-3 pages in length, double-spaced, using no larger than 12pt. font and 1” margins. A works cited page or bibliography must be included and does not count toward the 2 pages required for this assignment ...
