Is Israel a Democracy Country?
A democracy is a governance system where the government or governing body is
determined by the people, is supposed to be for the people and the people who are elected to
power from the people. According to Stanford (2004), for a system of governance to qualify as a
democracy, it has to have four key elements. The first is that the system should have a welldefined way of electing people through free and fair elections. Second, the people in the country
or department should be actively involved in the politics and civics of the country. Third, the
country should uphold the human rights of all its citizens. Finally, there should be a rule of law
that is above everyone and should apply in equal measure to all the citizens. Therefore, for a
country to be a democracy, these four elements or principles of democracy have to be fulfilled.
Israel is a country in the Middle-east that was created in 1948 with David Ben-Gurion as
its first prime minister (Quince, 2017). The Jews had nowhere to go and they had no country that
was willing to assimilate them. They were left with a simple option of developing their own
state. This led to the establishment of Israel. This meant that the Jews could now establish their
own army, build their own systems of defense and also build their own policy. Israel now had the
chance to develop its own procedures and governance. Over time, however, the system of
governance had been tested by wars and conflict (Quince, 2017). This has led to the state losing
most of its stability.
With the loss of stability, it is fair to ask the question whether Israel is still a democracy
or this has been lost as well. To begin with, we shall observe the first principle of democracy as
applied in Israel. The first principle is that the system should have a well-defined way of electing
people in free and fair elections. The Israeli system of governance is based on the proportion of
representation in the nation. The elections are supposed to be general, that is, they should be
