The definition and interpretation of the concept of quality vary across cultures,
individuals, and environments. In healthcare, according to the Medical Journal Armed Forces
India, quality is the extent to which interventions and healthcare services increase the possibility
of achieving the desired outcomes in patients and reduce or eliminate the possibility of resulting
in undesired outcomes. Essentially, therefore, quality in healthcare is the driving force behind a
healthy population. This essay explores the concept of quality in healthcare while making
recommendations on its application by leaders to healthcare organizations.
Fundamentally, quality in healthcare is the value provided by healthcare resources. It is
evaluated on the basis of safety, effectiveness, timeliness, efficiency, equitability, and the degree
to which it is patient-centered. There is no standard definition of the concept of quality in
healthcare, however, with its interpretation and that of its provisions varying across different
