Foundations of tourism

Description

Term Project Guideline

1) Choose the topic (see the syllabus for the options) and the destination(s) of interest

2) Go to library if you want to use the computers over there it is easier because library computers have direct access to the articles, or if you want, you can access to the electronic resources off-campus via signing in to your library account. Either way go to http://scholar.google.com/ and type your research topic (economic impact of tourism in Australia; women’s role in tourism, food and tourism, etc.) if you decide to go to library you will be able to download it with one click after you are directed to the article website, if you choose to study off-campus you will have to go to library website and go to e-journals, type the journal name, volume, year etc. of the article to be able to read the article.

3) Don’t get frustrated if you cannot find articles related to your chosen destination, try to find the same topic for different destinations and make inference out of those studies. The main point of literature research is to become familiar with the research topic chosen. Then, based on your readings and class learning you will make inferences to your chosen destination.

4) After you collect several articles, I suggest you to read the relevant articles first, beginning from introduction, literature review, (you can skip the methodology part) discussion, conclusion, and managerial applications parts, and try to understand the concept.

5) Take notes while you are reading.

6) After reading 2-3 articles you will understand the concept better

7) Then, you can begin to write your own introduction and read more papers as 10 to 12 references are expected minimum.

8) The introduction part should not be longer than 3 pages and should describe the general statements of the research, why the topic is important, the research questions, and what you are expecting to find out.

9) Then, you will write the literature review (this part is the synthesis of the articles you will read) Basically, what are the common ideas about the topic? What are the conflicting ideas about the topic?

10) After you write the literature review, you will write the discussion part , in which you will answer which ideas you most agree with based on the literature review? Why?

11) In conclusion part you will answer so what questions, which is why do we care about this topic?

12) Future research area is the last part of the term paper. In this part you will make suggestions based on the literature what future research should be conducted regarding the paper’s topic?

13) References and in text citations: APA style: if you are not familiar with APA style check https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

14) Writing style: grammar, punctuality, transitions, and so on are important and affect your grades.

15) Cover page : full names, title of the paper, submission date.

If you still have questions, there is one thing left : post your questions on the tourism café, and we will gladly answer them...

Economic Impact of Tourism in Australia
Introduction
Australia has a unique history of tourism since the colonial days. Australians are known
to have embraced the culture of moving from place to place in search of wealth, security,
pleasure and refreshing their memories. This has been a concrete foundation of booming tourism
business in the country. Tourism has become a key component of the economy of Australia,
despite the fact that the global economy is facing uncertainties due to political instability,
extreme weather conditions and many problems across the world (Mason, 2015). Tourism is one
global business industry that has been accorded due attention by various economic stakeholders
of the country. Australia is not immune to various economic problems such as the 2008
economic recession. Some economic sectors have improved while others are declining.
Tourism industry has played a critical role to national economy of the country.
Understanding the economic impact of tourism on the economy of Australia cannot be
overlooked since other countries of the world such as the United States, Canada, the entire
African continent; China, France and the United Kingdom do rely on tourism for living standards
of citizens. For example, the tourism sector in China is likely to be worth at least $9 billion by
2020 but some experts are still convinced that the figures may go higher up to $13 billion
(Mason, 2015). Therefore, understanding the economic impact of tourism in Australia is of great
value in helping it attain increase foreign exchange earnings. There are challenges crippling the
tourism industry in Australia hence comprehensive solutions are necessary. Research questions
to be addressed in this topic are: is tourism a booster to the economy of Australia? What are
common problems facing tourism industry in Australia? What are key tourist destination sites in

Australia? What are hybrid interventions to curb problems compromising tourism sector in
Australia? With regard to current topic, I expect to find out the positive impacts of tourism to the
economy of Australia, key tourist attraction sites, problems facing tourism sector and necessary
interventions to address the problem.
Literature Review
Research done by various scholars has indicated that tourism is an important component
of the entire economy of Australia. It is estimated that close to 3.1% of Gross Domestic Product
comes from tourism. More than one million citizens of Australia are employed in the tourism
sector; clear indicator that individual living standards do improve because of tourism (Vanhove,
2017). Economic experts in Australia opine that tourism is key and potential area for economic
growth beyond the year 2018. However, it is important to appreciate the fact that global political
and economic instability, decline in other economic sectors such as agriculture, mining and
construction do pose as barriers to tourism sector in Australia. However, there is likelihood that
some interventions such as 2014 economic agreement between China and Australia will
strengthen tourism industry (Vanhove, 2017).
