Palliative Care End of Life Issues Purpose: This discussion will help the student to gain understanding of ethical dilemmas revolving around end of life issues that may occur during patient care. Understanding of the use of ethical strategies in patient care decisions is vital. ****Prior to beginning this discussion please review the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics. The professional standards of the Association of Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses will be useful with this discussion as well. You may also use the standards of practice for your current practice area or the Standards of Practice and Professional Performance of the ANA. • • • • • Select one experience from your practice or personal life that presents an end of life issue of interest to you. Discuss the ethical dilemma associated with this issue. Reflect and present a thorough discussion of the ethical issues involved. Using ethical decision making strategies, formulate your personal position regarding your specific issue. Support this discussion with: o The ANA Code of Ethics o The professional standards of the Association of Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses/standards from your practice area or ANA o Your textbook and at least 2 other professional literature sources. Was the issue handled correctly? If not how better could it have been handled. As this is a personal examination you may use “I” in this discussion. The paper should follow correct APA 6th edition guidelines and correct grammar and syntax.
