Obesity Epidemic Obesity, the condition of being obese, has grown globally. Increasing sharply in the U.S. since the 1980s. Many have wondered why this is happening; maybe it is because there is a fast food joint on every corner. Or maybe we are too busy with work or school and family, so we decide that it is easier to snack on junk food. Without eating a full healthy meal. Whatever the reason, the rate of obesity in the U.S. population is continuing to grow in adults, they are passing this unhealthy condition down to their children. Socio-economic status, genetics, and environment as well as lack of exercise. Being brought up in a poor household often leads a person to become more obese. Not like those that have grown up in a wealthier environment. Wealthier people have better access to living a healthy life. While poor people have a more difficult time. In The Economist's article, “The Caveman’s Curse,” the writer states, “The rich and well-educated have mostly managed to stay slim, or at least have got less fat than the less well off… children with college-educated parents are less than half the rate of children whose parents lack a high-school degree.” The rich are able to get better educated they don't have as much problems with obesity. The article states, “Educated people may be better informed about health issues. They also have better access to doctors, gyms, parks, and healthy foods. The poor may be under greater stress, making it harder for them to resist food…” Basically, being poor means possibly having less education about nutrition, less money to join a gym and buy healthy food, and less time to go walk in the park to stay in shape. The only thing poor people have more of is stress. And that also makes people fat. Living in an area surrounded by fast food often leads a person to eat more of it. In the article, “The Bigger Picture,” Sharlet Michal explains how many people did not choose to live this life it was placed right in front of them. Quoting Hippocrates, “The constitution and the habits of a people follow a nature of the land where they live.” Poor neighborhoods have fewer grocery stores with healthy choices and good produce there are a lot more corner stores with junk food and fast food restaurants. If a person is poor they might not have a car to drive somewhere better to go shopping. Or time if they work more than one job. One way to help the obesity epidemic is to make sure everyone has better access to healthy food the city should build a well resourced grocery store within a mile of every poor neighborhood so no one is stuck with junk food alone.
