Describe a situation when you had a supervisor or coworker who you believe made an unethical decision and/or exhibited unethical behavior. Discuss why you think that person acted unethically, and discuss some mechanisms that an organization can put into place to prevent unethical behavior within their organization.

My coworker decided to inhale oxygen from the nitrous system when being used by one of our dental patients. Several of the other employees caught her, but they never said anything to her. They just talked about it behind her back. I overheard the conversation between two of the other employees and asked them why haven't they said anything to her. They both said that it wouldn't do any good. I did not want to get caught up in the office drama, so I just kept my eye out to see if I would catch her. Then, our dental hygienist came to me and asked if I had seen the dental assistant inhaling the nitrous. I had not, and she stated that she had. She said that everyone else had witnessed her on numerous occasions and they were going to report her. I agreed that it was an unethical issue on our hands and could harm the business. We waited to speak to our boss after she clocked out. He was furious after hearing the news. I understood why he would be upset. She is the best dental assistant in our office. Losing her would have impacted his business since she has brought him more clientele than anyone else. She was the only one who could work everyone's position in the office. He wrote her up while the entire staff witnessed the counsel session. I did not agree with publicly displaying her humiliation, but she was able to keep her job. My coworker was drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and coming to work with hangovers. She thought it was kosher to inhale the oxygen, but others may see it as a drug problem because we are not sure she was also using the nitrous oxide since they are both tied into one line. The issue was solved, and she has not repeated this behavior.

Regulations or rules should have been developed regarding employees using the nitrous oxide or even the oxygen line for personal consumption. Stipulations should be addressed in the handbook regarding an employee misusing the gases. We are given a handbook covering the code of conduct within our organization. It never discussed the topic in my discussion. Although we record every patient that uses the nitrous and oxygen gas, it is not effective to track inventory of consumption. I think that surveillance cameras should be installed in each room that has access to the gases. It can minimize or prevent employees from acting unethical.
