Running head: THE CULTURE OF OKINAWA JAPAN
An Insight on the Culture of Okinawa Japan
1
THE CULTURE OF OKINAWA JAPAN
2
Introduction
Okinawa Islands are an island group in Japan belonging to the larger Ryukyu Islands
Groups. The islands form a political, cultural, and ethnic entity that is distinct from mainland
Japan and is known as Okinawa Prefecture. The main ethnic group on the islands are the
Ryukyuans-the largest ethnolinguistic minority group in Japan, with over a million living in
Okinawa Prefecture (Hashimoto & Telfer, 2018).
While the Ryukyuans are not recognized as a distinct ethnic group by Japan and
assimilation efforts have been made since the annexation of the Ryukyu archipelago by Japan,
the islands remain linguistically and culturally distinct. The purpose of the present paper is to
review the culture of Okinawa Japan in terms of political makeup, holidays & celebrations,
religion, and art. This review shows that the Ryukyuans remain a culturally unique group that is
influenced and influences both Japan and the rest of the globalizing world.
Political Makeup
The Kingdom of Ryukyu gradually lost its independence starting with the second half of
the 19th century. In 1871, the kingdom became a domain of Japan while they still maintained
tribute relations with China. In 1879 the domain was abolished and the Okinawa prefecture was
established. The annexation of Ryukyu marked the beginning of an aggressive attempt of cultural
assimilation when schools prohibited the display of Ryukyuans culture and dress and
implemented a process of national indoctrination centered around the Japanese emperor (Barlow,
Rafael & Jung, 2017).
Okinawa was a major battleground during World War II, as the United States captured
Okinawa in order to use it as an air force to invade mainland Japan. The Battle of Okinawa lasted

for 82 days and about 95,000 Japanese and 12,510 Americans were killed. The battle was
described as bloody and many Okinawa died, either in the battle or by suicide (Buckner &
Stilwell, 2014). After the end of the world, Okinawa remained under the control of the American
military forces. The military occupation didn’t fully end until 1972. After this year, Okinawa
experienced a period of growth but is yet to reach the level of economic development of
mainland Japan (Hashimoto & Telfer, 2018). If in past Japan acted as a suppressor of the
Okinawa culture, the Ryukyuans found the new democratic Japan less repressive and significant
efforts to support the local culture and revive traditional arts have been made. While the tensions
between Okinawa and mainland Japan have eased, an independence movement still exists
(Barlow, Rafael & Jung, 2017).
An important political topic that sparks controversy in Okinawa is the pre...
