Thomas case
As a health psychologist, it all starts with the identification of the problem and the
reasons that Thomas is reluctant or does not want to adhere to the problems. The theories may
also differ on the severity of the condition and the age of the person that could shed light on the
cause of the behaviour change. Negative behaviour changes are costly and time-consuming to the
patient and also to the family members. For this case, I would consider several theories to help in
identification of the problem in order to recommend the best invention method.
The first theory would be Social Cognitive theory; it suggests that people will change
their adherence behaviours when they are aware of the health risk and the benefits. But also selfinfluences also contribute to change (Munro, et al., 2007). Self-efficacy includes some of the
influences that may result in negative or positive effects, material losses, and benefits. Health
belief model appraises the patient's behaviour on the balance between the barriers and the
benefits. Additionally, the perception of the victim towards the seriousness and threat of the
disease is another factor that has led to Thomas change. As mentioned by the doctor he seems
not to be serious with even measuring the insulin level neither take enough dosage. So it could be
that he does not view the disease as a serious threat to his health.
Another theory that would be suggested in this case is self-regulation perspectives which
theorize the adherence that is refocused to the patient (Hughes, 2012). It involves looking at the
past experiences of the patient of health threats and how they adapt to them. The theory assumes
people have motivated to treat illness and avoid them if they can. So the theory suggests that a
patient choice on coping strategies depends on personality, social, religious and cultural beliefs
(Hughes, 2012). From the analysis of the theories, the problem that Thomas may be leading to
the behaviour change may be caused by the perception of the threats that he is exposing himself

to. Also, the beliefs or past experiences about the threat since he does not seem to take the threats
seriously or view them as life-threatening.
The intervention plan to help him will start with a reminder using SMS to have
suboptimal adherence to insulin intake in the right quantity (Vervloet et al., 2012). It would be
that he may forget the amount of insulin that he needs to take or even the time he should be able
to measure his blood sugar level to ensure that it does not get to extreme levels. Another
