Abstract
The number of patients seeking long-term healthcare facilities in the United States is

demographic changes. Specifically, this paper explores the multicultural environment in these
facilities, its impact on the provision of medical services, and overall implication on the

Introduction
According to the BMC Health Services Research Journal, in an article published in 2016,
health care services in long-term care institutions are divided into two; technical care which
encompasses the provision of medical services and other related services to the residents of the
facilities, and interpersonal processes. The interpersonal processes feature the interaction
between the resident and their practitioner. For this process to run smoothly, it is essential that
the staff in constant interaction with the residents understand each resident’s background,
specifically their cultural background which is to significant extents responsible for the way they
interact with others, their values, beliefs, and decision making. With this need sparking the need
to understand and support residents’ culture in long-term care settings, it also brings to light the
essentiality of the incorporation of the expansion of the services offered by long-term care
facilities to include the fulfilment of the residents’ cultural needs, among them religious and
spiritual needs, in addition to ensuring their physical wellness. This essay discusses the impact of
a multicultural environment on residents in a long-term care facility while making
recommendations on the implementation of a multicultural facility council in the facility.
