Marriage is an institution, which is built by two individual who decides to spend the rest
of their lives together. Therefore, just like any other institution, marriage requires a strong
foundation that is built on love and friendship between individuals who decide to enter into
marriage. Gottman provides focus on unique concepts regarding what makes a marriage work.
The ideas that Gottman discusses are essential in defining marriage as an association between
individuals who fall in love and are well connected based on their physical and intimate
relationships. Thus understanding these concepts is essential in having a better knowledge of
marriage as well as crucial element, which make it successful. The marriage between my parents
will form the basis for understanding the key factors that shape marriage as an institution and
ensure that it works.
The relationship
My parents exemplify a successful marriage, which is based on a strong foundation of
love. Throughout my life, I have known my parents as loving and friendly individuals who enjoy
the company of each other. Even though it is true that there are fights in families, I have never
seen my parents fight. I tend to think that it is because they understand what to raise their kids
loving marriage as a union of love and thus prefer fighting or arguing in private to maintain their
strong public image. They always an emphasis on the need to respect each other in relationships
and I believe this is an essential factor in building strong relationship...
