The Five Constant Virtues
Introduction
Confucianism is a social philosophy that fundamentally focuses on human interactions in
the social terrain. Arguably, Confucianism has its foundations on role ethics, implying that it
focuses on the principles and rules that dictate the different roles of individuals in the society, as
well as the virtues that may be borrowed from those of good morals (Lec Week 4 Monday). In
the end, social reformation stems from these teachings. The five constant virtues of
Confucianism have stood the test of time and have been recognized for across many regions and
generations for many millennia throughout man’s dramatic civilization. They have become so
much relevant that they have started being regarded as Chinese Traditional Virtues. The virtues
help humans to coexist with one another regardless of the social differences that they may have.
The present paper will explore these virtues with an emphasis on Ren.
Benevolence (ren)
Ren is Chinese for benevolence, which stands for humaneness, love, goodness, or
humanity. It is the most important of all virtues respected under Confucianism. The avoidance of
envy or harm toward any other human being is one of the core manifestations of Ren. Inner love
and compassion also amount to benevolence. Other elements associated with ren include
considerateness, tolerance, empathy, and sympathy. The ability to forgive others also counts
among the core values of benevolence. As such, the virtue of ren has both the inner mind and
behavioral concepts.
There is no evil deed or dispute that surrounds the life of he who is to be considered as
benevolent. Again, such a person will take all the necessary action to ensure that those around
him or her can get any help that they may need since such a man is also caring. An example of
