1)-Select a long-term care service and discuss the problems facing long-term care services
today and advance ways to alleviate such problems.
Long-term care services include personal care services such as grooming and feeding,
community services such as adult day care, and medical care. For this question, I select nursing
home care as an example of a long-term care service. The challenges facing such services
include cost, quality, and staffing. The cost of long-term care services is considerably high, with
many individuals and families unable to sustain the payments for services such as nursing home
care. Additionally, the services are fragmented among different providers making the
standardization of their quality difficult. Consequently, different facilities offer different levels of
quality for similar services, with some of them offering poor and substandard services to patients
to the extent of causing harm to residents and others placing patients at the risk of death or injury
(Wiener, 2003). Finally, a majority of long-term care facilities are understaffed and lack
adequate direct care staff for their residents, with others lacking skills to provide specialized care
(Zimmerman, Sloane & Eckert, 2001). To alleviate these problems, I recommend the elimination
of their causes. The facilities should invest in good human resource policies which provide
platforms for staff training and retraining to ensure constant availability of skilled personnel to
