Research is important to the continued improvement of professional practice, and determining a focused research question is a crucial first step in the research process. Planning a research study requires critical attention to details, beginning with a well-articulated research topic and derived research question. The overarching research question drives the literature search, as well as the methods of data collection and analysis. This first assignment requires that you consider your already-defined research question and the various sources of information that might inform your proposed study.

Research Question “Are there adequate services available to pregnant women with Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders?” This question has been on my mind from working with this moms with the Healthy Start program for a year now. I have encountered many pregnant women that have reported to me they were unable to connect with substance abuse and mental health services in the area. I am very interested in exploring services for pregnant women. More specifically, services for those with substance use and/or mental health disorders. I chose this topic because I believe when substance use and mental health disorders goes untreated and unsupported, it becomes a problem for not only the individual but for the community as well. I work at an agency that service prenatal and parenting woman. The clients we serve are pregnant women but many are dealing with other things besides pregnancy. Recently it has been reoccurring that the prenatal moms are dealing with substance abuse issues and some also have mental health diagnosis, which can lead to postpartum depression. It is my experience with these clients that drives me to ask if they receive the services needed throughout their pregnancy. At the agency that I work, case managers give information to the clients on mental health. The resources suggested to clients by the case workers are: counseling service, Catholic Charities, Sanctuary for Life, and support groups. When using Neuman’s 4 techniques with turning topics into a research question I definitely looked into the resources available as well as talked it over with people (Neuman, 2012, p.91). The people I have interacted with are actual clients that are dealing with this issue at hand. While conducting my research, I realized that I am not the first person to pursue this issue. To conduct this study, I will interview women that I’ve encounter that are willing to seek help with substance abuse and mental health issues during pregnancy. Together we will set up goals that they wish to achieve. From there, I will do research and see what help is in the area that will aid and provide those services. References Neuman, W. L. (2012).
