Executive Summary

John Davison Rockefeller was many hats, he was a businessman, an investor, a visionary,
an industrialist, and a philanthropist. Brought up in a low-income family he overcame numerous
challenges to become one of the earliest American billionaires and one of the richest men in
history. His business acumen and great vision helped him steer Standard Oil Company to
become the leading producer of oil with approximately 95 percent market share in the oil
refinery during its peak. Nevertheless, his career has been analyzed as having been a tumultuous
one and rife with controversy especially when he was at the helm of the Standard Oil Company.
Some of the practices that he used were considered unethical business practice; he fought
ruthlessly to take away any competition and made Standard Oil Company a monopoly in the
sector. He was also a very keen philanthropist who cares immensely about the public and the
betterment of humanity. His philanthropic activities led to massive changes in the education,
public health, and in the medical sector as a whole. He was at the forefront of the funding
institutions under several of his foundations, and they led some of the world class institutions
that have a great reputation.

Background
John Davison Rockefeller was an American philanthropist and philanthropist, he and
other investors were the founders of Standard Oil Company one of the leading oil company. He
was born on July 1839 and died in 1937, he was the first born to William Avery Rockefeller
commonly referred to as ‘Big Bill' and Eliza Davidson. His father was a physician and a
salesman of snake oil (History, 2018). John D. Rockefeller early years were spent moving in
several places, but finally, they settled in Cleveland Ohio. The young Rockefeller got his first job
at the age of 16 as an assistant book-keeper after dropping out of Cleveland Central High School
and hardy completing even one single class in Folsom Mercantile College. John D. Rockefeller
married Laura Celestial Spelman and had four daughters and one son with her. From the eldest
was Elizabeth, Alice, Alta, Edith, and the last born was John Davison Jr. One of the most
significant influences that John D. Rockefeller got that would stay with him and lead him to
charity work was his mother, Eliza. She was a staunch Christian, and she influenced John to the
extent that he almost went into full-time ministry as a vocation (Lee, 2000). He was also looked
up to help fend for his siblings being a first born and in the absence of his father. That pressure
had even led him to learn to account at an early age (Lee, 2000). His deep devotion to
Christianity informed much of his worldview choosing to give back to the society as a way of
service.
By the time he was 20, he had his first business teaming up with his brothers and Maurice
B. Clark (History Cooperative, n.d). The business mainly dealt in the selling of hay, meat, and

grain. Rockefeller changed his focus to oil once he realized that dealing in the rare resource had
great potential following the expansion in its production in Pennsylvania, he developed a refinery
in Cleveland by 1863 and the business thrived. The main factor that made the place an ideal
business location for Rockefeller was the arrival of the train in 1851. There was also the
additional advantage of the water transport which was possible through the Ohio Canal or Lake
Erie, it was a crossroad location and ideal spot for the business, and it thrived (Lee, 2000).
It was however not until 1870 that he partnered with other investors and started the
Standard Oil Company in Ohio (History Cooperative, n.d). The idea of Standard Oil grew out of
the need to curb the uncertainties that existed in the oil industry, it was shaky and at the same
time disorganized and unpredictable. His idea grew out of the need to consolidate and create a
monopoly and bring some sanity in the industry, the Standard Oil Corporation of Ohio was born
(Lee, 2000). The company grew by leaps and bounds and even went on to control major railroads
and acquired pipelines and terminal facilities to ease the movement of their oil. The company
went on to become a monopoly even leading to enactme...
