A society is always defined by the cultural values and standards upheld by the people living
in the community. Consequently, there will always be some activities considered normal, and
others deemed as being contrary to the expectations of the community. The definition of deviant
behavior lies in the understanding of what would be considered appropriate within the society
(Downes, Rock, & McLaughlin, 2016). In essence, activities that appear to contradict the
expectations of what the society would term as being appropriate behavior are generally deviant
behavior. For instance, since no community expects that some of its members would survive on
taking other people’s property without permission, stealing is considered a deviant behavior in
almost every social community.
