Ulker 1 Duygu Ulker Composition I Research Paper 8/6/2018 Ulker 2 Causes of Increase in Childhood Obesity The globe is experiencing rapid nutritional changes characterized by persistent dietary deficiencies (Sahoo, et al., 2015). Despite efforts to ensure the children's health in the country in the past century, an epidemic of childhood obesity has broken. One-third of children in the United States are obese or overweight, and this figure continues to rise (Staff, 2005-2018). This fact is alarming since these children are likely to develop non-communicable diseases at a young age. Children are more likely to be obese when they are used to a sedentary type of lifestyle, have unhealthy eating patterns and genes also play a role; however, management of these factors can reduce the increasing rates of childhood obesity. It is widely accepted that an increase in obesity results from an imbalance in energy intake and expenditure. Dietary intake preferences play a huge role in a human being's body weight. The current society maintains a fast life because they are always busy. As a result, children end up getting used to food from fast food restaurants. The meals at these restaurants are laden with calories, and their nutritional value is very low (Staff, 2005-2018). Most families especially where both parents work outside the home opt for fast food. This is because the food is readily available, inexpensive and saves on time. Some parents do not consider the number of calories in the foods before serving them to children. Besides, advertisements on televisions make fast foods look like a-must-have making them attractive to children. The snacks and beverages that children consume are also high in calorie content. Most children are used to sodas, baked goods, candy, and processed foods. When children are exposed to food that is high in calorie content, they start to gain weight. Similarly, children learn by modeling the behavior of their parents and peers. This includes mimicking their preferences and willingness to try new food (Sahoo, et al., 2015). Children will get used to the feeding styles that they are exposed to. If the adults in the home Ulker 2 love food that is high in calories, children will also prefer to consume the same food. Therefore, parents and guardians hold a great deal of power over their children. A change in their dietary preferences would automatically result in a change in the child's as well. Repeated exposure to healthy foods helps children to develop choices in healthier foods, as well as overcoming a dislike in some of the foods (Youth, 2005). In addition to that, parents should stress on specific mealtime structures. For example, families who eat together are more likely to consume healthier foods at home. Equally important, parents should create time to make home-cooked meals for their families. They can also include the children in meal preparations. As a result, they will look forward to the meals. It is also worth mentioning that the lifestyle that a child adopts contributes immensely to their weight. As stated earlier, a child grows accustomed to what they are exposed to. Children who adopt a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to become obese. Most children spend most of their time watching television (Staff, 2005-2018). They have grown accustomed to watching the shows on tv because their parents and guardians do the same. Moreover, some parents keep children busy by making them watch tv. With the increased popularity of computers and video games, children spend very little time taking part in physical activities (Staff, 2005-2018). Physical activity is significant for children. A person's body has to expend energy for normal resting function. This refers to basal metabolic rate. Studies show that people who are obese have a low basal metabolic rate. Furthermore, the calories consumed have to be burned. Therefore, children need to be encouraged to take part in physical activities. These can include taking up a sport, walking, swimming, and playing outside or at the park. Parents can accompany their children Lastly, genetics are also examined as one of the leading causes of childhood obesity. Children are more likely to be obese if the mother or the father are also obese. Studies have Ulker 2 shown that a body mass index (BMI) of 25-40% can be inherited (Sahoo, et al., 2015). Nevertheless, genetic susceptibility has to be accompanied by other contributing factors such as behavioral or environmental factors. Besides, if a child maintains a healthy lifestyle and an active life, they are likely to retain healthy weight regardless of their genetic makeup. Research studies also indicate that a genetic factor only accounts for a small percentage of cases of obesity among children. For this reason, it is possible for parents to prevent their children from becoming obese. Childhood obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. There are some causes of childhood obesity. Children who consume food that is high in calorie content are likely to be obese. Not to mention, a child's risks being overweight if they do not take part in physical activity. An active lifestyle burns out calories. Additionally, genetics can also play a significant role in a child's body weight. These causes can be mitigated by maintaining healthy lifestyles. Parents should strive to make healthy meals for their children and limit the intake of high-calorie foods. Moreover, they should also encourage their children to take part in physical activities such as playing in the park. All in all, the increasing rates of childhood obesity can be slowed down by maintaining healthy and active lifestyles.

Childhood obesity
Childhood obesity has hit a climax in both the developed and developing countries, the
issue of overweight and obese has impacts on the physical and psychological development of the
child. Many children are becoming obese and overweight but the numbers are continuing to rise.
Children that experience overweight have the tendency of becoming overweight in adolescent
and in adulthood too (Centers for Obesity Research and Education, 2010). Childhood obesity
exists and it has adverse effects on children but this can be prevented through doing activities
that can burn calories or through healthy meals.
There are many reasons that render children overweight and one of them being genetic,
this is the most difficult situation to control because they inherit it from their parents but it does
not have to affect all the children of obese parents. There is a probability that children of obese
parents might inherit it even though not all of them.
Unhealthy eating patterns may also cause obesity and with the changing lifestyles people
have moved away from the healthy eating patterns and there is now a lot of junk food
consumption. With the rise of technology, there are many methods that are coming up
concerning the preparation of meals and this is what is leading to unhealthy meals. There are also
a lot of fast foods around and because people have become busy over the time with either
employment or other activities they tend to go for the ...
