Psychological Impacts of Mass Fatality Occurrences
Mass casualty incidences refer to situations in which huge numbers of lives are lost,
individuals are affected and in which, in most cases, response services such as medical personnel
and evacuation teams are overwhelmed (Kessler et al., 2008). Such incidences range from
natural calamities such as storms, floods as well as wars. Some of the recorded mass causality
incidences include the hurricane Katrina in the US which occurred in 2005 as well as the Madrid
Train bombings in Spain which occurred in 2004. This paper discusses these two incidences with
emphasis on the psychological effects on the masses. Among the areas of interest are the
psychological signs exhibited by the affected individuals, both direct and indirect as well as the
management plans put in place to ensure recovery of those affected.
The Hurricane Katrina
This storm is among the most fatal ones that have ever been witnessed in the US history.
Classified as a category five storm, the storm struck the United States’ gulf coastline on 23rd of
August 2005 (Knabb, Rhome & Brown, 2005). Among the major cities that were hard hit by this
storm were; Florida, Texas, New Orleans, Mississippi, Bahamas as well as Alabama (Knabb,
Rhome & Brown, 2005). It has been argued that the huge number of lives lost as a result of the
hurricane could be attributed to the flooding. The Flood protection system in New Orleans was
thought to have been a major contributor to the flooding issue since it was poorly designed
(Knabb, Rhome & Brown, 2005). Close to one thousand three hundred people lost their lives.
Estimates of the overall damage caused by the hurricane were placed at a hundred and twentyfive million US dollars (Knabb, Rhome & Brown, 2005).
