Description

you will research and analyze the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the fight against terrorism. UAVs are also referred to as drones and may be armed with missiles or simply used for surveillance.

The United States has utilized drones to strike targets in several countries, including Yemen, Iraq, and Pakistan. Targets have included members of al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the Taliban.

Research and prepare a comprehensive analysis of the use of UAVs in the fight against terrorism. Submit a Microsoft Word report of 7–9 pages that covers the following points:

  • Describe the UAVs and how they operate.
  • Discuss the advantages of using UAVs.
  • Evaluate whether UAVs have proven effective. Cite statistics or other data to support your conclusion.
  • Identify and describe the several uses of UAVs in the fight against terrorism.
  • Discuss the difficulties that UAV operators face, including the legalities of using UAVs to conduct operations in another country.
  • Select one real example of a successful US drone strike and describe it. Explain who or what was struck, where the strike took place, and other relevant information.
  • Analyze and evaluate the overall policy of using UAVs on the battlefield.

Unmanned aerial vehicles are flying robots which are remotely controlled using both the
GPS and sensors that aid in controlling them. They are commonly referred to as drones. They
can be controlled by humans from the ground using a remote or by onboard computers. With the
dynamism in technology, drones are the new products in town. They are either used in missions
which seem difficult or dangerous missions to humans (West & Bowman, 2016). Drones are
applied by the military for surveillance, reconnaissance or even gathering intelligence about a
location of interest. There are two types of medium drones which are used in military missions
namely the MQ-1B predator, which was initially designed to collect intelligence and for
surveillance while the MQ-9 reaper, is mostly used to launch attacks (West & Bowman, 2016).
Drones are operated from three major points; the local position where takeoff and landing are
done, the space, which enables transmission of information to the sensors on its cockpit and
lastly a central airbase which is mostly based in the United States where information is sent.

Drones have multiple propeller systems which enable them to fly to higher heights. They
also have many motors which enable loaded drones to have control and balance while in the air
and prevent them from falling. They also have removable batteries which provide energy to the
motors to keep the propellers moving. The experts on the ground use the remote control to
transmit communication from the central base to the drone through radio waves via the satellites.
The landing and taking off are controlled using the propellers by either increasing or reducing
their speed or the motor rotation. They are also fed with instruction regarding the release of
missiles and other weapons.

Drones have become common in most military missions due to the many benefits
attributed to their use. Their benefits include their low cost of operation compared to military

missions and other methods of warfare. Drones can launch missiles while being controlled by a
small number of experts thus reducing the cost of launching attacks. There are also low risks
associated with the use of drones since they are controlled from a distance thus the risk of
attacks. Therefore, many lives are not put at stake. Drones can also be in use for many hours
unlike when pilots are used to either collect information or give surveillance over a certain place.
They can go up to 24 hours without draining the battery thus increasing the time of operation.

Additionally, they are recommended in the military operations due to their easy
deployment whereby, they are only required to be launched close to the needed location and then
controlled to the location where they are needed. Some are deployed physically using hands
while others can take off from the ground themselves. Drones are also efficient and accurate
