As we drive to work on every day and perform similar or the same tasks on a daily basis,
yet we do not stop to think of our health and safety guidelines that have been put into place for
our own protection. Within the workforce, many updates and changes have taken place. Women
have revolutionized the workforce and many policies and procedures that never used to exist are
now in place to benefit and protect employees, customers, and the employer. One important
aspect that has changed the workforce forever is the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration. OSHA has made significant strides of improvements on safety within the labor
force environment.
OSHA History and Purpose
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), was established in 1971,
signed into law by President Richard Nixon, and first put into legislation in 1968 by President
Lyndon Johnson (United States Department of Labor Administration, 2018). Within the next few
years many health and safety guidelines were established, and inspectors were trained to inform
the public. One of the first issues pursued was the regulations of asbestos, which focused on
protecting employees from lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other illnesses (Webb, 2017). As the
years followed, new regulations were put in place such as construction regulations, building
regulations, and many standards were issued or improved upon. For example, construction
workers were ordered to wear hard hats to prevent head injury, and employers were required to
purchase PPE gear which is Personal Protective Equipment such as glove, goggles, or earplugs
(Webb, 2017). Since then, OSHA has continued to establish and improve on safety guidelines,
requirements, and courses of action. OSHA also continues to train, inform, or educate the public,
employers, and employees.
The history of OSHA is an important evolution to understand and appreciate how far it
has come. OSHA was designed to help prevent any harm, injury, or death while on the job.
OSHA has developed and implemented many guidelines and regulations to set forth a healthy
and safe work environment. In order to successfully keep people informed, OSHA provides
information, training, and assistance to employers and workers (OSHA Administration, 2018).
OSHA also performs inspections of any covered workplace without any advance notice. The
main goal is to keep everyone safe while at work. OSHA requires employers to follow OSHA
regulations and are responsible for informing employees of the regulation guidelines. Since
OSHA has been established, the organization has saved thousands of lives per year and helped
reduce work related injuries.
Examples of OSHA Standards
An important standard for any general work location is sanitation. Sanitation may
sometimes get overlooked as something small or unworthy or employee’s attention, but it is
extremely important in any environment to protect someone’s health. In the sanitation section of
OSHA standards, some key points are, keeping trash picked up, keeping dry floors to prevent
slips and falls, take care of pest and rodent control, and proper food handling and safety (U.S.
Department of Labor, 2018). For example, it is important to mop up any type of liquid spill to
prevent an employee or customer from falling and injuring themselves, or to keep trash picked
up and taken out in a timely manner in order to prevent any sort of contamination or infestation
or some sort. Sanitation is an important aspect of health and safety.
Another important standard under OSHA is a requirement of an emergency action plan in
place. This will help employers and employees know what to do and be prepared in a state of
emergency such as a fire. Employers must provide a written and oral action plan to their
employees (U.S. Department of Labor, 2018). The employer should have procedures for
evacuations, reporting an emergency, an alarm system, and training in place. For example, when
I worked at the hospital, if a fire alarm would go off, it was procedure to shut all doors to patient
rooms and anywhere else and staff to remain on their floor until further notice.
A third important standard for OSHA is PPE gear or Personal Protective Equipment.
OSHA requires employers to purchase PPE for all staff. PPE may be for your eyes, face, head,
and extremities and will be used where necessary to protect individuals from hazards of
environment, chemical and radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants (U.S. Department of
Labor, 2018). For example, when I worked for the hospital, if a patient had a contagious
infection or illness, it was mandatory to use proper PPE gear before entering the room and
disposing of it properly before walking anywhere else in the hospital. PPE was also required to
be readily available upon entry to a contaminated room.
OSHA Violation
OSHA violations can be detrimental to a company. OSHA can observe or investigate an
establishment at any to check if they are in compliance with OSHA regulations. For example, a
company that had a large fine is the Sunfield Inc. from Hebron, OH. It is an auto parts
manufacturer who was fined $3.42 million after being investigated. Sunfield Inc. was cited for
46 egregious willful, two willful, one repeat and eight serious safety violations and placed on the
Severe Violator Enforcement Program (Musick, 2016). This was one of the largest violations
from this type of company in the U.S. and it may have ruined the company. Not only were large
fines given to the company, but employee’s health, safety, and lives were put at risk from the
company’s employers. It is extremely important for employers and employees to follow OSHA
guidelines and properly educated.
